It only takes a few minutes, and sometimes even seconds, for the fire to spread throughout the entire room. However, if you react quickly and properly extinguish a flame that is just beginning to flare up, then serious consequences from a fire can be avoided. And improvised fire extinguishing means will help us with this – household items that belong to the primary fire extinguishing means.
Fire extinguisher
The most reliable solution. It is not necessary to keep it in your apartment, but just in case of a fire, experts still recommend stocking up on it – believe me, it won’t be a waste! It can easily cope with extinguishing a small fire, for example, with an electrical appliance on fire. To put it into action you need:
- break the seal;
- pull the pin;
- point the nozzle at the source of fire;
- press the lever.
…and the fire will be extinguished.
Water
Universal fire extinguishing agent. It is almost always at hand, available in sufficient quantities and extinguish perfectly! But pay attention – water is an excellent conductor of current. Before extinguishing electrical appliances that are under electrical voltage, they must be disconnected from the network. To do this, unplug the plug from the socket, or better yet, turn off the power to the entire apartment – turn off the toggle switches on the electric meter. And remember that you cannot extinguish burning liquids with water, for example, burning oil in a frying pan – the liquid will fall into the hot oil, fiery sparks will scatter throughout the kitchen and this will only worsen the situation. In such a situation, it would be best to cover the burning object with soda – it can easily cope with such a fire. Other bulk materials can also replace soda: buckwheat, rice, sugar and washing powder.
Houseplant soil or sand
Cover the fire with soil. What apartment doesn’t have a couple of flower pots. Perfect for putting out fires. The soil absorbs heat well and stops the access of oxygen to the source of fire. It is best used for small fires. For example, if you saw that the carpet or upholstery of upholstered furniture was on fire.
Thick fabric
Blankets, carpets, towels, outerwear or other, preferably dampened, fabric can be an excellent aid in extinguishing small fires. They allow you to limit the flow of air to the flame and stop combustion. All you need to do is cover the source of the fire as much as possible with a thick cloth.
In addition to fire, smoke also poses a great danger during a fire. Just a couple of breaths and a person can get severe carbon monoxide poisoning and even die. If you understand that you cannot cope with the fire on your own, do not take risks: leave the danger zone yourself and get people out, report the fire by calling 101 or 911.
